The HUSERMET Project
the human serum metabolome in health and disease...

Introduction to Metabolomics

  • A metabolite is a substance which is used or created by the metabolism of a particular organism or by a particular metabolic process
  • Sugars, amino acids and fatty acids are all examples of metabolites
  • Our genes, what we eat and drink, and the environment are just some of the things which affect the levels of metabolites within our body
  • Metabolites are potentially a good indication of the state of our health
  • Therefore, it is important that we understand what causes changes in metabolite concentrations, and their significance, if we are to develop new ways of diagnosing and treating disease
  • By comparing metabolite levels in two or more sets of samples (e.g. between people suffering from a disease and those who do not), significant differences may be identified
  • Metabolomics and Metabonomics are ways of studying metabolites, and determining their concentrations, in biological samples
